You've probably heard how Merkava is the best tank in the world, how its design is so unique and good that no tank can match it. Well, that is far from the truth, and today we are going to look at some of the problems of Merkava, Merkava Mk4 to be exact, since that is the most modern variant currently in service.

The merkava MK4 Barak , the termal visions is one of the best and the commander has a vision of 360 degrees with his special helmet and the fire extinguisher system is not really failing anymore,
it does NOT in any way hinder the thermal vision for the gunner or the TC!
The Merkava is expected to fight defensive battles and provide support to counterinsurgency operations in urban and mountain terrain. The Merkava is designed to deal with very specific national requirements. The front engine design is a throwback to the Mk1 of the 70's when they didn't have the armour necessary. Since all Merkava MBTs share the same chassis, the Merkava MkIV is still stuck with a front-mounted engine. But as you say it is an issue.
In the 2006 war in Lebanon the IDF recorded over 500 AGTM attacks on its tanks. Out of 50 Merkava IIs, IIIs and IVs struck by Hezbollah projectiles and IEDs, 21 were penetrated and six destroyed. 18 MkIVs were hit by ATGMs during the war, resulting in only one tank destroyed and not a single death.
The armor schematics of the front hull of the merkava are: the upper frontal plate, the engine, the distance between the UFP and the rear plate, and the rear plate. In other tanks the front hull is the only protection the crew has, so in order to stop an attack like a long rod penetratore APFSDS the composite armor on the front needs to be thick to break the penetratore and catch it before it kills the crew. In the merkava 4 the upper plate that is 200 mm thick can have a Line of Sight of 300 -700 mm depends on the angle, it is made of composite materiales and its job is to either stop and break weaker penetrators or break and degrade the most powerful penetrators so they can be absorbed by the engine. Now naturaly you say the engine is made out of lightweight materials and and offer no resistance to a APFSDS, and that is true it weighs about 7-8 tons and is about 1.7 meters in length against a apfsds it will offer about 80-100 mm of resistance more or less..BUT against a penetrator that has been degraded by a 500 mm LOS plate, that has been broken and its fragments are moving in diffrent angles tha engine can be extremly difficult to beat. The engine is also not of a homogenous constuction, by that i mean that it has spaces angles, liquids king like composite armor made of different materials, so it can be quit traumatic for the penetrator to move in because of the change in velocity it experiences...So the frontal armor of the merkava just needs to break the penetrator in order to assure the survival of the crew. Other MBT (except T-14) will have much more difficult time resisting Kenetic penetrators from the front (hull).
The lower plate is still vulnerable againts Kenetic penetrators (when shot from a lower position, from an upper position the Rod will exit from the floor plate) but is still good against Chemical Energy.
The rear hatch of the tank by itself is an amazing advantage..you have no idea how hard it is to pull an unconscious soldiers though the top hatch while underfire..this thing alone can save a lot of people..
4. There are problems with the Weight distribution of the tank because of the front engine, BUT the are advantages also.. in other MBT in the front of the tank you have the front glacis, the crew the front armor of the turret, basically almost all of the armor is on the front and its counter weight is the engine on the back, so you are basically limited on how much armor you can put on the front by the weight of the engine. In merkava the front section has the engine and the front plate, and its counter weight is the turret that sits in the back ..so to counter weight the frontal weight you can add more armor to the turret especialy the sides and the top armor, so you can have the most heavily armored turret in the world basically.
5. The sloped turret of the merkava is interesting, it offers good resistance against most angles of attacks against the turret without being insanly heavy. You have to remember that israel have specific requirments, it knows exactly what kind of penetrators its neighbor has and is prepared to go against them..egypt has m1a1 (we have peace but you know if you want to live in peace prepare for war) syria has mostly t72 and some t90..so it can expect about 600-maybe 700 mm of penetration..in case its neighbors magically developed an 800 mm penetrators it can just increase the frontal arc of the tanks to deal with it..if it get really bad it can just slap more armor on top ..the smooth surface makes it easy.
The IDF is a defensive army it never leaves to go on adventures on other continets so spare parts are always available .
