Viaccess is a system access control incorporating an encryption device for pay TV, developed by France Telecom (now Orange). Successor to the analog device “Eurocrypt” it is particularly operated by Orange TV (for ADSL and satellite), Canalsat , Canal + , AB Sat , BIS Télévisions , the SVT for SVT World , the SRG SSR and TNTSAT . Until its merger with its competitor, the bunch GST operated Viaccess.
Viaccess SA is also the name of the subsidiary of France Telecom, which provides these access control systems, pay TV, as well as the software allows them to automate remotely on smart cards subscribers, making update permissions and access rights.
In 2011, four versions Viaccess (PC2.5, and PC2.6 Viaccess 3.0 and 4.0 (ex- Fransat ) are in service in France or abroad.
In 2012, Viaccess PC5.0 version starts to be deployed.
Earlier versions have been “compromised” (they finally let unauthorized viewers to access programs), operators prefer their Viaccess 4, which has not been ” hacked “to date (2011).
Principles
There are three elements in the system Viaccess:- a protocol for delivering remotely on the equipment installed at the subscriber, encryption keys, opening access to programs corresponding to the subscription contract;
- a conditional access module , installed at the subscriber (either integrated into the satellite receiver, is provided separately in the form of a map showing the physical format of the standard PCMCIA ), and equipped with a smart card reader; this dialogue module one hand with the smart card according to the instruction set provided by Viaccess protocol and when the smart card provides him back the keys necessary, descrambles the other strings received;
- a smart card to the standard ISO 7816 , Viaccess implementing the protocol and providing the conditional access module’s life means to descramble the short chains ( control words ), while it keeps secret ways to duration long life ( Key operating and management ).
Viaccess is not the function to encrypt either the picture or the sound of the television transmission. This work scrambling is performed by another process, called Common Scrambling Algorithm ( common , as used by all television broadcast DVB, regardless of the conditional access system that also use). A conditional access system such as Viaccess is limited to providing or not the means to descramble the program using the algorithm CSA , based on secret keys and detainees access rights by the subscriber smart card, and update these keys and such rights on this map.
Scalability
Satellite receivers and cable operation in 2008 feature generation Viaccess 3. It theoretically guarantees a “backward compatibility” (they can accept cards prior generation of chip). Backward compatibility (eg generation of smart card 4 in a compatible receiver Viaccess 2) is also provided, subject to the new features (mainly related to safety) are not implemented on these cards last generation.For example, in France, BIS TV, TNTSAT and FRANSAT use Viaccess card 4. BIS TV does not implement the new security features on all its services, and its Viaccess 4 cards work in all Viaccess decoders.TNTSAT and FRANSAT implement some optional features, and therefore their cards only work in the decoders implementing the Viaccess 3 or higher protocol. This can be used by the operator to impose the use of a decoder that has labeled specifically for use with its bouquet. For example, a FRANSAT card does not work in a TNTSAT receiver and vice versa.
The main purpose of the successive developments Viaccess is to enhance the robustness of the system (with encryption mechanisms more difficult to compromise). On some external or receiver modules, the software update conditional access is permitted to make them scalable and compatible with the latest developments.
