Merkava has not suffered any ATGM or LAW damage since the installation of the Trophy APS.and the iron fist system even when it was hit in the past the crews generally survive the hits and the tanks are usually in recoverable condition. Terrorist photo streams are not the most reliable means of determining tank survivability. Iron FIst is even able to counter kinetic energy penetrators. seems to be better suited to counter threats that use decoys to fool an APS. the TOW is a top down firing ATGM. It is designed to detonate overtop of the turret and fire an explosively formed penetrator downwards into the top of the turret.  it destroyed a T-90 with a side strike and is seriously fucked about that T-90.

Consolidate production, save money per unit, make more units, makes sense.T-14 improves mostly in the aspects of survivability over the T-90 and other tanks. It has fully safe ammunition storage as there is no crew in the turret. When in a hull down position the unmanned turret means that the crew is fully safe not being in the line of fire at all (not having to rely on turret armor that may have weakpoints in form of turret mantlet and ring). The crew not being in the center of the tank also helps in case of attack by top attack ATGMs. The heavier platform also means more armor that in this case has to cover a smaller area than in a normal tank as the complete 3 man crew is in a small capsule instead of being sprinkled across the whole tank

It was first used extensively in the 1982 Lebanon War. The name "Merkava" was derived from the IDF's initial development program name.

Design criteria include rapid repair of battle damage, survivability, cost-effectiveness and off-road performance. Following the model of contemporary self-propelled howitzers, the turret assembly is located closer to the rear than in most main battle tanks. With the engine in front, this layout is intended to grant additional protection against a frontal attack, especially for the personnel in the main hull, such as the driver. It also creates more space in the rear of the tank that allows increased storage capacity and a rear entrance to the main crew compartment allowing easy access under enemy fire. This allows the tank to be used as a platform for medical disembarkation, a forward command and control station, and an infantry fighting vehicle. The rear entrance's clamshell-style doors provide overhead protection when off- and on-loading cargo and personnel.

The Mark IV is the most recent variant of the Merkava tank that has been in development since 1999 and production since 2004. The upgrade's development was announced in an October 1999 edition of the Bamachaneh ("At the Camp") military publication. However, the Merkava Mark III remained in production until 2003. The first Merkava IVs were in production in limited numbers by the end of 2004.
