Merkava has not suffered any ATGM or LAW damage since the installation of the Trophy APS.and the iron fist system even when it was hit in the past the crews generally survive the hits and the tanks are usually in recoverable condition. the TOW is a top down firing ATGM. It is designed to detonate overtop of the turret and fire an explosively formed penetrator downwards into the top of the turret. it destroyed a T-90 with a side strike and is seriously fucked about that T-90.

The crew not being in the center of the tank also helps in case of attack by top attack ATGMs. The heavier platform also means more armor that in this case has to cover a smaller area than in a normal tank as the complete 3 man crew is in a small capsule instead of being sprinkled across the whole tank

The Merkava is a main battle tank used by the Israel Defense Forces. The tank began development in 1973 and entered official service in 1978. Four main variants of the tank have been deployed. Design criteria include rapid repair of battle damage, survivability, cost-effectiveness and off-road performance. Following the model of contemporary self-propelled howitzers, the turret assembly is located closer to the rear than in most main battle tanks. With the engine in front, this layout is intended to grant additional protection against a frontal attack, especially for the personnel in the main hull, such as the driver. It also creates more space in the rear of the tank that allows increased storage capacity and a rear entrance to the main crew compartment allowing easy access under enemy fire.
