India will be sealing its western borders with Pakistan in next two months.

Israeli SPYDER missile system is being deployed on the western borders in a bid to strengthen its preparedness in striking down any aerial threat from Pakistan.

The missile system is capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, unmanned air vehicles , and precision-guided munitions.

OVERVIEW:

The SPYDER (Surface-to-air PYthon and DERby) is a low-level, quick reaction missile (LLQRM) to neutralize hostile targets up to 15 km away and at heights between 20 and 9000 meters.

The system will field 2 types of missiles, Python 5 and Derby.

The Python-5 is currently the most capable air-to-air missile (AAM) in Israel's inventory. It has speed of 4 Mach and has infrared homing + 320 by 240 pixel dual waveband electro-optical imaging seeker.

The Derby is an active radar homing air to air missile that provides the SPYDER missile system with a fire and-forget option.

The type of the missile (Python or Derby), will be chosen automatically depending on the kind of threat.

The air defense system is developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with assistance from Israel Aerospace Industries.

The system is mobile and is mounted on 6 by 6 high mobility tactical trucks.


DELAY:

The missile system should have been in place more than 3 years ago, but because of the non-availability of the Czech-made Tatra trucks on which these missiles were to be installed, the process got delayed.

The Tatra trucks got mired in a controversy over bribery allegations, but the technology transfer ultimately helped in the indigenous production of the new trucks on which the SPYDER system can be mounted.

Now the system will be mounted on 6 by 6 high mobility Tata motors trucks. Tata being Indian company, will save India precious foreign exchange & boost domestic manufacturing.


LAYERED APPROCH:


India has chosen layered approach to air defense. SPYDER will be used in conjugation with indigenous Akash missile defense system.
Akash flies at supersonic speed; reaching around Mach 2 point 5. It has a range of 30 km and can operate in any weather condition.



INDIA has taken a slew of measures to strengthen its air defense capabilities in the recent past and it is also going to deploy another air defense system called the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) system from Israel, which can strike down targets at 50-70km.

M R SAM, is a land-based configuration of the Barak-8 naval air defense system.

India will buy 450 M R SAMs and 18 firing units at a value of more than $2bn. This system developed by India's Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is expected to enter service with the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2017.


The Indian force would receive a major boost when it starts getting the S-400 air defense missile system from Russia, which is considered as the big daddy of air defense.

It can take out targets at 400 km and can be very effective against any enemy flying assets including AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control System) and cruise missiles at great distances.

India has been actively ramping up its defenses with slew of measure. The Western border with Pakistan, a point of concern, is being made more and more secure not only in terms of air space but also the land border.
