HOW ISRAEL BECAME THE MILITARY SUPERPOWER?

HOW ISRAEL BECAME THE MILITARY SUPERPOWER?

Today, Israel has become synonymous with military prowess. The tiny West Asian nation has a reputation for always deploying a qualitative edge on the battlefield and tactical chutzpah, an appropriately Yiddish word. Many states the world over, bigger and richer, struggle to replicate what the tiny Jewish state of eight-and-half million people has achieved within a short time. In The Weapon Wizards: How Israel Became a High-Tech Military Superpower, Yaakov Katz, editor-in-chief at the Jerusalem Post, and Amir Bohbot, military editor at Walla, describe Israel's journey from independence in 1948 when the new state had barely two shekels to rub together to its emergence now as a destination for high-tech military equipment.

Some of Israel's success is due to its rather unique situation – from the moment of independence, the state has constantly been at war. The nature of Israel's wars may have changed from state to non-state opponents but the threat still remains. As Haim Eshed, the father of Israel's satellite program, casually remarks, "the shadow of the guillotine sharpens the mind". Material adversity, numerical deficiency and geographical disadvantage forced the Jewish people to compensate with motivation, intelligence and innovation. As former deputy national security adviser Reuven Gal commented, if Israel is not creative in its thinking, there is a chance that it will not survive; therefore, with its meagre resources, it had to become the ultimate jugaad nation.
https://youtu.be/Y7BpdOKWDAU

There is, of course, the human element. As Katz and Bohbot explain, the greatest strength of Israeli society is its informality and absence of hierarchy. Contrary to expectation, mandatory military service has not made Israelis regimented. In fact, most revel in their casualness and indiscipline. New recruits into the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) address their superiors as 'Sir', but after a while are encouraged to refer to their commanders by their first names and are not obligated to salute them. As US Air Force Lt Gen Ronald Kadish found out, in Israel, it is not uncommon to see aircraft mechanics argue with generals over the performance of a fighter jet – even in front of international visitors! What mattered Kadish's hosts was only that the lowly officer made sense.

Israel also benefits from the fact that its population seems to always be floating between active service and reserve duty. Along with the circulation of manpower, the IDF also benefits from the skills and networks this manpower brings in from the professional sphere. Their military experience gives them a perspective most weapons developers lack elsewhere in the world and helps them come up with innovative solutions to a fast-evolving battlefield. Some countries like the United States second military officers to defence contractors but personnel parachuted in run the risk of being seen as outsiders. The seamless flow of talent between civilian and military realms gives Israel a distinctive edge over other states.

The IDF does not take this inflow of talent for granted. “Reservists come for a set period of time, and the last thing you want to do is make them feel like they are wasting their time,” Shuki Ben-Anat, former head of the IDF Reserve Corps, explains. Much like their full-time brethren in the military, they often chase a problem up the chain of command until it is resolved. The emphasis is always on the workable practical rather than the perfect theoretical. “Harvard graduates might get a first-class education and a doctorate but it is all theoretical. In the IDF, soldiers get a doctorate in life," David Ivry, a former commander of the Israeli Air Force told the authors.

The Weapon Wizards is thematically divided into chapters around certain technologies, weapons platforms or tactics. The book begins with the smuggling of arms for the fledgling state of Israel in 1948 when no one except Czechoslovakia was willing to sell it weapons. Even government officials were involved in the web of deceit Israel wove to acquire precious weapons and technologies that could hopefully be replicated at home. The United States, Britain and France had put an embargo on arms sales to Israel in the hope that it would produce restraint in Moscow from supplying the Arab states with weapons.

Is Israel a Military Superpower?

https://youtu.be/SNq1chOZucI

Israel is an exceptional nation, and this is certainly true when it comes to the Israeli military. Tested by war, heroic in its self-defense, Israel is leading the way in developing the most advanced weapons technologies and re-imagining the new realities of the modern battlefield in an ever-changing Middle East. In an important new book—"The Weapon Wizards: How Israel Became a High-Tech Military Superpower"— Jerusalem Post Editor Yaakov Katz tells this story from the front lines of Israeli military innovation and with the analytical eye of a master journalist. He brings us into the fascinating world of Israeli weapons development—from drones to satellites, missile defense systems to cyber warfare—and he looks beyond the technology to consider what Israel’s edge means for its larger geopolitical strategy.

On February 6, 2017, Mr. Katz joined an exclusive audience at the Tikvah Fund for a fascinating exploration of how Israel became a military superpower, and what this means for the future of the Jewish state. He also discussed some of the major developments in current Israeli politics and world affairs, offering his insight as one of Israel’s veteran journalists and keenest analysts.

How Israel developed the most technologically advanced military across the globe
How Israel developed the most technologically advanced military across the globe
https://youtu.be/OaP3o8uxB5k
Unlike its Arab adversaries, Israel did not have natural resources to fund its economy.

There was no oil or minerals. Nothing.

The delegation held a couple of meetings but was mostly met with laughs.

The Israelis were trying to sell oranges, kerosene stove tops and fake teeth, the New York Post reports.

For countries like Argentina, which grew its own oranges and was connected to the electrical grid, the products were pretty useless.

It’s hard to imagine this is what Israeli exports looked like a mere 67 years ago.

Today, Israel is a high-tech superpower and one of the world’s top weapons exporters with approximately $6.5billion (£5.2billion GBP) in annual arms sales.

Since 1985, for example, Israel is the world’s largest exporter of drones, responsible for about 60 percent of the global market, trailed by the US, whose market share is under 25 percent.

Its customers are everywhere — Russia, South Korea, Australia, France, Germany and Brazil.

In 2010, for example, ?ve NATO countries were ?ying Israeli drones in Afghanistan.

How did this happen? How did Israel, a country not yet even 70 years old, become a superpower with one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the world that is changing the way modern wars are fought?

The answer, I believe, is a combination of a number of national characteristics unique to Israel.

First, despite Israel’s small size, about 4.5 percent of its GDP is spent on research and development, almost twice the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development average.

Of that amount, about 30 percent goes to products of a military nature.

By comparison, only 2 percent of German R&D and 17 percent of the US R&D is for the military.

Another major contribution is the culture of innovation and creativity in Israel.

Israelis are more willing to take risks than other nations.

They get this from their compulsory military service during which they are tasked, at a young age, to carry out missions often with deadly consequences.

While Israeli 19-year-olds embark on operations behind enemy lines, their Western counterparts can be found in the safety of their college dormitories.

Lastly, Israel has been in a perpetual state of conflict since its inception, fighting a war almost every decade.

This reality, of having your back up against the wall, sharpens the mind.

It forces Israelis to be creative and come up with innovative ways and weapons to survive.

This is the Israel story …

Robotic border patrols ::

The Guardium is a part of a new category of robotic weapons known as Unmanned Ground Vehicles or UGVs. Israel is the first country in the world using these robots to replace soldiers on missions like border patrols.

In addition, soldiers require breaks, food and water.

All a Guardium needs is a full tank of gas.

Other UGVs in use by the IDF include the Segev, which is based on a Ford F-350 pickup truck.

Facing terrorists who use tunnels to infiltrate into Israel from places like the Gaza Strip, Israel is also relying on UGVs like robotic snakes to slither their way into underground passageways and enemy headquarters.

The robots will then map out the structures, giving soldiers an accurate picture of a battle area before the place is stormed.

The same is happening at sea.

Israeli defence contractor Rafael has developed an unmanned patrol ship called Protector which is being used by Israel to protect its strategic ports and patrol the country’s long Mediterranean coastline.

The Arrow anti-missile programme ::

In 2000, the Israeli air force received its ?rst operational Arrow missile battery, making Israel the ?rst country in the world with an operational system that could shoot down incoming enemy missiles.

Mini Spy Satellites ::

In 1988, Israel launched its first spy satellite into space, gaining membership in the exclusive club of just eight nations with independent satellite-launching capabilities.

From the beginning, there were those who doubted Israel was capable of developing, building and launching its own satellite, but in the nearly 30 years since that day, it has grown into a satellite superpower, now operating eight different spy satellites in space.

Drones ::

It is referred to in Israel as the “drone that can reach Iran.”

The Heron TP is Israel’s largest unmanned aerial vehicle with an 85-foot wingspan, the same as a Boeing 737 airliner.

It can stay airborne for 24 hours and carry a 1-ton payload.

The top-secret tank ::

To this day, the Merkava tank is one of Israel’s most top-secret projects.

It is said to be one of the most lethal and protected tanks in the world, and its construction started out of pure necessity — the United Kingdom and other countries refused to sell Israel tanks.

Israeli Air Force Documentary - Most Strategic Air Battle Of All Time - Military Channel

The Israel Defense Forces. "The Army of Defense for Israel", frequently recognized in Israel by the Hebrew acronym Tzahal (צה ״ ל), are the military pressures of the State of Israel. They contain the ground forces, flying force, and also navy. The IDF is goinged by its Chief of General Team, the Ramatkal, subnormal to the Defense Minister of Israel; Lieutenant general (Rav Aluf) Gadi Eizenkot has functioned as Chief of Team considering that 2015.

An order from Protection Preacher David Ben-Gurion on 26 Could 1948 formally set up the Israel Defense Forces as a conscript army developed out of the paramilitary group Haganah, integrating the militant groups Irgun and also Lehi. The IDF worked as Israel's militaries in all the nation's significant armed forces operations-- consisting of the 1948 Battle of Independence, 1951-- 1956 Retaliation operations, 1956 Sinai War, 1964-- 1967 Battle over Water, 1967 Six-Day Battle, 1967-- 1970 Battle of Attrition, 1968 Battle of Karameh, 1973 Operation Spring of Youth, 1973 Yom Kippur War, 1976 Operation Entebbe, 1978 Operation Litani, 1982 Lebanon War, 1982-- 2000 South Lebanon dispute, 1987-- 1993 First Intifada, 2000-- 2005 Second Intifada, 2002 Procedure Defensive Guard, 2006 Lebanon Battle, 2008-- 2009 Operation Cast Lead, 2012 Procedure Pillar of Protection, as well as 2014 Procedure Safety Side. The number of wars and also border problems where the IDF has actually been associated with its short past history makes it among one of the most battle-trained militaries in the world. [8] [9] While initially the IDF operated on three fronts-- versus Lebanon as well as Syria in the north, Jordan as well as Iraq in the eastern, and Egypt in the south-- after the 1979 Egyptian-- Israeli Peace Treaty, it has actually concentrated its tasks in southern Lebanon and also the Palestinian Territories, including the First and the 2nd Intifada.

The Israel Defense Forces differs from the majority of militaries worldwide in numerous means. Distinctions include the mandatory conscription of females and also its framework, which highlights close relations between the military, navy, and air force. Because its starting, the IDF has been specifically developed to match Israel's unique security scenario. The IDF is one of Israeli society's most prominent organizations, influencing the country's economic climate, culture and political scene. In 1965, the Israel Protection Forces was granted the Israel Reward for its payment to education. [10] The IDF utilizes numerous modern technologies developed in Israel, several of them made specifically to match the IDF's demands, such as the Merkava main fight tank, Achzarit armoured employees provider, high tech weapons systems, the Iron Dome rocket defense system, Trophy energetic defense system for vehicles, and the Galil and Tavor attack rifles. The Uzi submachine weapon was created in Israel and also utilized by the IDF up until December 2003, ending a service that started in 1954. The Complete History of Israel's Intelligence Community: Mossad, Aman, and Shin Bet (1990)

The Mossad (Hebrew: הַמוֹסָד‎, IPA: [ha moˈsad]; Arabic: الموساد‎, al-Mōsād; literally meaning "the Institute"), short for HaMossad leModiʿin uleTafkidim Meyuḥadim
About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039...

(Hebrew: המוסד למודיעין ולתפקידים מיוחדים‎, meaning "Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations"; Arabic: الموساد للاستخبارات والمهام الخاصة‎ al-Mōsād lil-Istikhbārāt wal-Mahāmm al-Khāṣṣah), is the national intelligence agency of Israel. It is one of the main entities in the Israeli Intelligence Community, along with Aman (military intelligence) and Shin Bet (internal security).

The Mossad is responsible for intelligence collection, covert operations, and counterterrorism, as well as bringing Jews to Israel from countries where official Aliyah agencies are forbidden, and protecting Jewish communities. Its director reports directly to the Prime Minister.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_...

The Directorate of Military Intelligence (Hebrew: אגף המודיעין‎, Agaf HaModi'in -- lit. "the Intelligence Section", often abbreviated to Aman) is the central, overarching military intelligence body of the Israel Defense Forces. Aman was created in 1950, when the Intelligence Department was spun off from the IDF's General Staff (then, Agam: אג"ם); the Intelligence Department itself was composed largely of former members of the Haganah Intelligence Service (HIS). Aman is an independent service, and not part of the ground forces, navy or the Israeli Air Force.
It is one of the main entities in the Israeli Intelligence Community, along with Mossad (national intelligence) and Shin Bet (general security). It is currently headed by Major General Aviv Kochavi. It has a staff of 7,000 personnel (1996 estimate). Its special forces and field-reconnaissance unit is Sayeret Matkal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military...)

Sherut haBitachon haKlali (Hebrew: שירות הביטחון הכללי‎, General Security Service), better known by the acronym Shabak (Hebrew: שב״כ‎, IPA: [ʃaˈbak], Arabic: شاباك‎), in English as the Israel Security Agency (ISA) or the Shin Bet (a two-letter Hebrew abbreviation of the name), is Israel's internal security service. Its motto is "Magen VeLo Yera'e" (Hebrew: מגן ולא יראה‎, lit. "Defender that shall not be seen" or "The unseen shield"). It is one of three principal organizations of the Israeli Intelligence Community, alongside Aman (military intelligence) and the Mossad (foreign intelligence service). Shin Bet's special operations unit is Yamas.

IWI Israel Factory Tour - Home of the Tavor

Published on 28 Jul 2013
We were invited to Israel to visit the IWI factory just outside of Tel Aviv. Obviously this was a one of a kind opportunity for both MAC and for the YouTube firearms community. We not only toured the home of the Tavor but also the Negev 5.56 and 7.62x51, the Jericho 941, Uzi, Galil ACE and the X95. After the factory tour we headed to the range and fired all of the weapons mentioned, which really was the highlight of the whole trip. It's one thing to see these amazing firearms, but getting to fire them? Out of this world!

We would like to thank IWI for their hospitality and for making this trip possible.

Israel: A Nation of Innovation

This film focuses on Israel's extremely advanced technology. Despite continual conflicts over land and water, and fighting for the right to exist, Israel has overcome these challenges and stood her ground. In only sixty-three years of existence, Israel has achieved the highest number of start-up companies per capita, and is second in the number of companies on the NASDAQ, only trailing the United States. With our documentary, we aspire to raise awareness for Israel's need to exist as a nation for Jews and non-Jews alike because we all rely on their technology.
