More than 200 million set-top boxes (STBs) were shipped during 2009. Another 50 million households chose to use the devices to receive both pay and free-to-air television, according to new data published by IMS Research.
The report, The World Market for Digital Set-top Boxes & iDTVs – 2010 Edition, says total shipments of 204 million STBs were within one per cent of the shipment forecast by IMS in the 2009 edition of the publication.
Growth during 2009 can be attributed to analogue switch-off in the US, which accounted for 27 million digital terrestrial STBs, or 13% of world shipments. Close to 30% of STBs shipped in 2009 went to Brazil, China, India and Russia.
Anna Maxbauer, who co-authored the report, said the market had shifted slightly in response to the global economic slowdown. “Contractions of disposable income meant fewer households were able to adopt digital TV or upgrade to advanced services in 2009. Many operators delayed equipment upgrades, modified pricing, or focused on enhancing bundled offerings as a result.”
Maxbauer said the combination of digital cable and FTA satellite projects in China and imminent ASOs in Europe would require tens of millions of additional set-top boxes to be shipped over the next 18 months
