The Merkava carries its ammunition in open storage racks in the hulll and turret
its higher torque and diesel engine as well as its APS and ability to work with dismounted infantry far better.
the Merkava 4 has air conditioning
you are aware that israel has much more tank combat expirience then the us?
the 2nd biggest tank battle in history took place in the sinai desert where more then 1200 egyption tanks clashed with 400-500 israeli tanks
The Israelis are amazing weapons designers. The Merkava was designed for tight quarters battle within tight towns and cities which is why it has such unique armament. The Merkava is meant to be able to move very well and has amazing electronics.the merkava was also ment to use blitzkrieg type of tactic but also a very defensive tank because in a war situation israel cannot retreat more then a few miles because israel it self is very small so because of that lets say the enemy out numbers you you get into a defensive position and fire at them before they can fire at you and then when they retreat you charge at them with full speed...he mortar on the Merkava is a good feature. the slickest looking beast ever built, period
The Merkava is a very slow, heavily armored and low profile MBT. It is not designed to fight alone but in collaboration with infantry, artillery and air force. The emphasis in its design is crew survivability and not firepower
he Merkava was made for urban warfare and is probably the best tank to fight terrorism. Because of crew high survivability and the fact that there are armor everywhere on this tank. That was the idea behind this tank, they new they wouldn,t have to fight advance war machine. So the crew is safe from mines, rpg and most artisan armor penetrating weapon weather it hit below, behind, side or front! No tank in the world is more well designed in term of urban warfare survivability.
The Merkava has a More universal purpose as a crew transporter among other Things and the Merkava is adapted for Israels purpose, and exels at crew protection With its front mounted engine and Escape hatches at the back of the tank. Its undouptedly the best tank for Israel,Merkava's are getting popped left and right from shoulder munitions. I dont trust its armor package, the Merkava was never destroyed by an ATGM, and now it will never be since it has the Trophy APS, and soon it will have the Trophy 2 in the upcoming Merkava Mk4 Barak upgrade, along with many more upgrades, that will allow it to intercept APFSDS rounds. All smoothbore 120mm cannons can fire Israeli LAHAT ATGMs with 8km range compared to Russia's 5km ATGMsthe LAHAT is a ok missile but its a gen 3 missile system where the refleks and sprinter is upgraded to match gen 4 standards. Also the "Spike" is a much much better missile if we look at Israli ATGM systems.
But never the less the LAHAT cant be fired from all 120mm guns, it needs a targeting computer and guidance system and thats not as easy to mount on a tank as people think. The Merkava is not made to fight other tanks, its armor package is steel with simple ceramics & Composites, thats also the reason why RPG-7 and ATGM's fired by Hizbollah is a problem right now. The only ERA that can withstand dual stage warheads like fx the Spike is the T-90's upgraded ERA package.
The Russian Armata series vehicles are inspired by the Merkava platform's success in placing as many major systems as possible in a common hull. This simplifies logistics and improves the armor performance of APCs. It also ensures that all your vehicles maneuver together. Merkava's armor is at least equal to Abrams or Challenger 2. Trophy is combat proven and is certainly effective. "The Merkava Mark IVm Windbreaker is a Merkava Mark IV equipped with the Trophy active protection system (APS), designated "Meil Ruach" (Hebrew: מעיל רוח; "Windbreaker" or "Wind Coat"). The serial production of Mark IVm tanks started in 2009 and the first whole brigade of Mark IVms was declared operational in 2011. The Trophy APS successfully intercepted rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles, including 9M133 Kornets, fired by Hamas before and during Operation Protective Edge in 2014"The Merkava Mk 4 us the L44 that is inferior on todays battlefield, it uses cheap composite armor & use a giang crew compartment that is hard to armor up (explanes its weight) and its not modular enough compared to what is needed (Leopard A7 is a good exampel on how this can be achieved)
Do this make the Merkava Mk 4 a bad tank? No not when its facing rebels with shoulder munitions (no tank is good at fighting this anyways). It can easily match Egypts and other hostile nations around its borders armor inventory (Abram M1's and M60's)The L44 is obselite sins its velocity & range is not up to date. More importantly if normal APFDS rounds are used then the gun is next to useless vs the T-90MS og T-14.
The us army is not in the same situation sins they use depleted uranium in there ammunition but I bet you they will switch to the 130mm as soon as it hits the market.its common knowledge depleted uranium is more dense than tungsten aka "Steel penetratiors" and as such pack more kinetic punch sins it does not shatter as early....
first google image exampel I got just to make my point:
https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-371b3684bbe57136b3ad1c36c6c812ce-cA DM53 fired from a L55 has roughly the same RHAe penetration as a DU M829A3 from a L44. A DU M829A3 fired from a L55 is more effective, however the DM73 is stated to even have 20% more effectivness. It really comes down to the advancement of the round.
the merkava is cheap as fuck because its armor is basic and not advanced ceramics with composites & Depleted uranium..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_armourthe merkavas armor is made from steel, spaced, laminate armor. The mark 3 is belied to have a basic ceramic composite armor that is ONLY used by israiel. The reason for this is 1. israle wans to be self stuffiness and dont want to rely on others even tho there armor is better like british armor is considered the best on the market if not using depleted Uranium. Chobham and Burlington were developed in the 70s-80s Merkava 4 entered service in 2004 and development started in 1999. Also Israel has less corruption in their arms industry and defense bureaucracy than in most NATO members. This is due to Israel having legitimate threats to defend against. NATO has lacked this since 1991 and the US has lacked legitimate conventional threats since 1945. The quality of American armor was lacking horribly and the programs that led finally to the Abrams took from the 1960-1980 to bear significant fruit. The initial production variant of the Abrams actually had poorer thermal sights and fire control than its predecessor the M60A3 TTS. The corruption and inefficiency involved in the US Defense Department procurement processes are legendary. Now when the Abrams is on the verge of obsolescence the US is beating around the bush about upgrading it. It will likely not be until 2025 the M1A3 is even close to operational readiness in significant numbers and the project is guaranteed to be over budget."Armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot"Third generation Chobham is used on the Abrams, challenger & leo 2. Its basicaly just high hardness steel, tungsten and some plastic filler with ceramic components. That is what Chobham is.
I been in an armored vehicle after a RPG-7 HEAT warhead penetrated the front and engien of the vehicle. The engine took it but it had punched trough ½ of the engine block. The reason why it did not do more damage was the distance it had to travle aka space armor works but a APFSDS would have eaten that engien bulk no problem. Chobham isn't used on the Leopard 2. KMW/Rheinmetall favored their own development over the british. Also the Challenger 2 uses a later version of Chobham than the M1. http://below-the-turret-ring.blogspot.de/2016/03/chobham-armor-facts-and-fiction-1.html
The DU isn't the groundbreaking part of the M1 Abrams armor. Just a cheap alternative to tungsten, hyped by the media. The main part in chobham is the used ceramics and rubber (no shit), the DU is just a backplate. Also hardness =/= KE properties. That's why advanced steel/aluminum alloys are used today. Chobham is actually more against shaped charges than KE. The 4th gen AMAP used on newer Leopard 2 utilises steel alloys, having better KE/shaped charge resistance properties. The chobham used on the challenger 2 is also more effective.
And of course, the front engine argument is bullshit. It's because the Merkava is also used as Namer APC, a front mounted engine in a MBT is stupid, resulting in a bad balance and harsh terrain mobility. They even flip
Chobham was the first real sanwitch multi composite armor so i just call it Chobham , its just easyere and sins its secret no one knows precisely what its made of. Think the first version of Chobham was called burlington or something like that.
DU is considered better that wolfram but the bige hype is the fact you are using ammunition and armor made of something you dont want on the battlefield, allot of the Types & T-62's we saw in iraq was "glowing in the dark" and it was not considered healthy to go near them. The dust particles from a DU spear or armor (armor that have been hit) will make you a sad panda.
You cant compare AMAP sins its just add-on armor plating. You can add it to any tank. Most modern tanks have armor made from the Chobham/Burlington concept. The add-on modular armor & reactive armor(like the tusk for the M1) is the future. The AMAP armor is yet to be tested in combat but the ieaders behind the modularity is excellent! I would kill to have the ability to have access to extra bottom armor or add-on side armor for urban combat op's.
TBH the picture you are using is a merkava that drove off a ledge, the problem with the engine in front is the turret placement. In urban combat it rly sucks to have to poke out over half of the tank to get a show down range. Thats how tanks get fucked in urban warfaresrael also has plans to implement the Iron Vision system on the Merkava 4 soon. This system is developed from the HUD displays on the F-35 fighter jet will give Merkava crews unparalleled observation and situational awareness. The best tanks are made by the countries who are using the hell out of them and have the lowest rates of political interference in their Military Industrial Complexes.
