Syria: Hmeymim Airbase hosts new Syrian-Russian cultural centre

SOT, Sergei Bezrukov, Russian actor (Russian): "This is a cultural and leisure centre of Russian and Syrian friendship. In order to know a man, you should know their culture. I think it is hard to imagine something better for facilitating mutual understanding between cultures. I think this centre will contribute greatly to the mutual understanding and cooperation [between Russian and Syrian cultures]. And of course, leisure is very important for military men. Because being far away from the homeland, which is actually really far, it is very important not to lose ties with the homeland."

Footage filmed on Friday at the Hmeymim Airbase shows everyday life at the locale dubbed the "centre" of the Russian Air Force's military operations in Syria. Cooks can be seen preparing food for those stationed at the airbase, which features a range of aircraft and military vehicles operating in the country including the Su-34 fighter jet.
Spokesperson for the Russian Air Force, Igor Klimov, said the military has "created all the necessary conditions in order to successfully perform its tasks," including the deployment of airfield engineering and support systems. "In a short time we have built dozens of field infrastructure units, including refuelling pumps, field canteens, as well as a bakery and bath and laundry facilities," Klimov said, adding that military personnel are located in "furnished barracks equipped with air conditioning that provides comfortable living in hot climates."
