One police officer has been shot in the head amid an ongoing active shooter situation at a bodega in Jersey City Tuesday -- and every single public school in the city has been locked down as multiple SWAT teams respond, according to a senior law enforcement official and local authorities.
The situation is fluid and information is developing rapidly; one law enforcement source described the attack as an "ambush," and said at least one man was holed up in a bodega with a long gun, sources say. Some sources said a woman was also inside the store, but her possible involvement in the ongoing shooting situation wasn't immediately clear.
Heavily armed local and state officers in SWAT trucks swarmed the scene, ducking behind doorways and store entrances -- some even crawling along sidewalks, closely pressed to the ground -- as they zeroed in on the bodega where the suspect was believed to be barricaded. Gunshots -- dozens of them, it appeared -- continued to pop off throughout the afternoon, based on audio from the scene. The streets in the immediate area were totally empty of what would normally be heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea said that while it was still difficult to comprehend the shooters' precise motive, an assessment of surveillance footage from the bullet-riddled scene showed what they said could be nothing other than targeted murder. A senior law enforcement official says the attack is now being investigated as a possible hate crime.
The footage shows the shooters, identified by four law enforcement sources Wednesday as David Anderson and Francine Graham, deliberately bypass other people on the busy street, aiming directly for people inside the kosher deli. Information continues to develop, and while authorities said Tuesday that it appeared the standoff began with the deadly shooting of a police officer at a separate site, Fulop and Shea said Wednesday that the bloodshed began

Security video confirms a police shootout in Jersey City, New Jersey, with a pair of rifle-wielding suspects that left a detective and three victims dead began with a deliberate attack on a Jewish deli, authorities said on Wednesday.
The son of former NYPD commissioner Bernie Kerik is being hailed as the hero of the horrific attack at a Jewish market in Jersey City, New Jersey. Detective Joseph Kerik and two other officers were the first officers to exchange fire with the killers. The two suspects killed are David Anderson and Francine Graham, said to be members of a hate group called the Black Hebrew Israelites. Police say they found an anti-Semitic "rambling manifesto" along with a pipe bomb, in their vehicle.
Police reportedly suspected the shootings began as a drug deal gone bad in New Jersey; bystanders caught in the crossfire as the suspects barricaded themselves in a market.
