The navy and other branches already have projects working with coil guns. The navy has planned to use them as large ship guns that can fire projectiles over 400 miles in theory. How far their research has come, I don't know. However with large guns with room for larger equipment it's a very logical and cheaper than using cruise missles for somthing you can hit with a chunk of metal costing next to nothing.
